This lecture is designed to undertake a comprehensive investigation of the inaugural English translation of The Return of the Condor Heroes. It centers on the precise portrayal of the social anxiety disorder exhibited by the central character, Xiao Long Nv (小龙女), at the linguistic level and delves into the evolution of her linguistic expression subsequent to her encounter with the main character, Yang Guo (杨过). The research encompasses a wide-ranging examination of translation challenges linked to the nomenclature of pivotal characters, with particular emphasis placed on the translation of names such as Li Mochou (赤练仙子李莫愁) and other immortal figures, as well as the translation of classical poems and verses embedded within The Return of the Condor Heroes. Additionally, this study delves into an exploration of the impact of cultural elements on foreign readers, intricately addressing emotional articulation within the literary work, including the nuances of character emotions, while diligently avoiding the incorporation of religious terminology. Furthermore, the investigation probes the differentiation between adventure and romantic narrative threads within the literary work and investigates translation strategies for instances involving the simultaneous appearance of multiple similar character names, such as the Seven Masters of the Quanzhen Sect (全真教全真七子). Lastly, the research gives careful consideration to how the semantic depths of character names are transmitted in translation and addresses matters related to editorial decisions and meticulous attention to detail to ensure that the final translation faithfully encapsulates the quintessence of the original work.
